Puppy Care & Kitten Care at North Georgia VRP
As a Marietta, GA, Vet Referral Practice, we always advise new pet owners to make sure they allow a vet to provide proper puppy care and kitten care to get pets off to a strong start in life. If you're in need of veterinary care for your new puppy or kitten, trust us to provide your pet with the best care available.
Initial Exam and Vaccines
A major aspect of puppy care and kitten care is getting a comprehensive exam from our Marietta, GA, veterinarian. This involves a complete inspection of your new pets from head to tail. They will be checked for any internal issues, diseases, coat conditions, weight, and we will look for any signs of parasites such as fleas and ticks. This exam and those to follow help your pets avoid the onset of disease and chronic problems over the duration of their lifetimes.
Pet Vaccinations and Boosters
During the first exam your pets will receive a rabies vaccination along with core vaccines and any non-core vaccinations they might need. Dogs and cats receive similar vaccines with a few differences. However, rabies is required by law for all animals. Here are the puppy and kitten vaccines recommended.
Kitten Vaccinations and Boosters: Core vaccines for cats typically come in a single shot called the FVRCP that protects them against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, and feline distemper (pankluekemia). A recommended non-core vaccine for feline leukemia (FELV) is also recommended. A few of these require booster follow ups.
Puppy Vaccines: Dogs will have a single shot for distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza called the DHPP. A non-core Bordetella shot may also be advised.
Spaying and Neutering
To avoid unwanted pregnancies contributing to pet overpopulation, we highly recommend spaying or neutering your new pets around 8 weeks of age. These procedures help moderate undesirable behaviors, helps prevent diseases and cancers of the reproductive organs and can help extend pets' lives.
Parasite Prevention and Pet Microchipping
Microchipping your pets can help them get home safely should they get lost. It’s discrete, painless, and affordable for owners. Keeping disease causing fleas and ticks away from your pets is vital to their health. We offer an array of options for parasite prevention and medications.
